Make it stand out
-
The Homecoming Initiative was born from a deep desire to rewrite the story of missions—one rooted in authenticity, dignity, and shared humanity. Backed by the Fergus Simpson Foundation, this movement empowers people of color to reconnect with their heritage, walk in legacy, and lead with purpose.
This initiative invites African Americans, people of color, and diverse congregations to challenge the traditional black-and-white narrative of missions and step into a more vibrant —one painted with shared service, cultural exchange, and justice-centered love.
This isn’t just a mission trip. It’s a movement of mutual transformation—where we go to give, but we return having received just as much. It’s about carrying light—across the ocean and back into our own neighborhoods.
-
The Homecoming Initiative began here because this island carries the legacy of Black missionaries who helped spark revival and community transformation. Many were formerly enslaved, and yet they crossed oceans with courage to serve.
The Homecoming Initiative was born out of the Fergus Simpson Foundation, a legacy-based nonprofit dedicated to treasuring the past, training the future, and transforming the community.
And when we leave, the mission doesn’t end.
What echoes in the mountains continues in our own communities. This isn’t just a trip. It’s a rhythm that becomes part of you—driving you to carry the light long after your feet touch American soil again.
-
The Homecoming Initiative centers the Black experience—but is open to all. We especially welcome:

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
